We are Pat and Marge McClanahan. We both have a deep passion for GOOD coffee. In fact that was one of the first things that Pat asked Marge when they first met, "Do you like coffee?" Marge's response was, "Yes, but not the weenie coffee that you find in so many restaurants". From that time forward when we get coffee we get a single cup, sharing with one another.

Pat had tried roasting his own coffee for a while in a hot air corn popper before upgrading to a small home roaster. When they got married, Marge too found an interest and bought a used hot air popper at a rummage sale. She used that producing some interesting roasts on the deck in the backyard. She used to store it under the cover of the bbq grill. One day Pat decided to preheat the grill for the burgers they were going to have for supper. He never bothered to check under the lid, simply igniting all three burners. Within minutes the black smoke was pouring out from under the hood and Marge's "roaster" was a glob of melted plastic.

Covenant Roasters is the culmination of an idea that Pat and Marge came upon one day as they were trying to come up with a way to help pay for their seminary education, both of them are enrolled at Sioux Falls Seminary. With the passion for coffee and their desire for perfecting their roasting techniques they started looking for a roaster. About five months later they found a used roaster and decided to purchase it along with about 600 pounds of green coffee beans. Part of their desire is to work with the people and the communites who provide the coffee that we so enjoy.
